First Light
Washington, D.C.
9" x 12"   oil on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout went to Washington DC this month to visit the Nation's capital! While many of the artists chose the parks or monuments, I wandered around the neighborhoods until I came upon Congress Heights. I found this quiet street just as the sun was coming up. (See it here.) It was peaceful and beautiful, and I knew I could capture it perfectly in bright fresh colors!

This piece is painted on all sides, you can frame it up, or you can hang it, just as it is.

Bay Area Haze
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
 $75.

We don't get a lot of haze air in the San Francisco Bay Area in winter, but when we do it is kind of pretty to paint! Not so pretty to breathe of course. This area has gotten almost no rain in the past several months and it shows in the air - dusty, dry, and , well, full of color.  It's perfect weather for plein air painting - but we could really use some rain.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed up, or  hung  as  is.

Snake Pond,
Cape Cod

The Virtual Paintout is visiting Cape Cod, Massachusetts this month - this is a painting challenge using Google Street View. I toured around  until I found this nice place  by this big pond. Then I thought about it for a while – how could I make this picture fun and just a little different....   Well, as you can see, it was a lot of fun and it is a bit different, certainly for me!  You can see where I painted by clicking here!

This painting was painted on all sides of the canvas. You can frame it or hang it just as it is.

Here for Now
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
$75.

This is another of the vanishing trees of Mountain View, where big development is running rampant. I didn't even see this tall, gangly tree until the old Tropicana Motel was torn down. There it was, standing solitary in the morning sun - a little island of nature in a sea of broken concrete. Those other trees (beside the big-box Western Appliance store, now gone) seemed to stand by, providing a little quiet company. These trees are are the last of many on these lots, and I wanted to document them before they are gone.

This painting was painted on all sides, it can be framed or hung  just as it is.

Mystery Sunflowers

I came across this glass vase of sunflowers while on a walk one morning. There they were,  just sitting in an empty driveway, and there they stayed for several days. What's the story here? I'm sure there is one...

Saying  Good-bye
11" x  14"   oil on canvas
 $75

Adieu to this nice tree. It, and the many trees behind the fence are slated for demolition. This is where a new apartment complex is going in and the tree-lined parking lot is on its way out. Sadly, this guy is in an especially bad place - a new turn lane is desperately needed here. So everybody can agree: it's a good tree in a bad place. It seemed important somehow to capture its likeness and to quietly celebrate its life. It's been here a long time.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed or hung as it is.
