The winter solstice has come, and for many of us, winter is here. This still life came about with flowers from my imagination, and the scarf from my coatrack. It has a very festive and holiday feel to it, and gives me a chance to wish you all a very happy Holiday Season, no matter how you celebrate. This is a time for kindness and good will, and I hope that feeling carries you into the future.

This piece is painted on gallery wrapped canvas (1.5”). The picture continues on all sides of the canvas and hangs flush against the wall. It does not need framing, but you could if you like.

Fall Color

The seasons are slow to change here in Mountain View, where I live. So although winter is less than a week away, the fall color has the trees ablaze. This view is the from the parking lot of my bank, and though I have stood right there, I did not see this - a scene waiting to be painted - until a friend sent me a picture he had taken with his camera! Thank you, Paul!

I started (what I thought would be) a simple easy piece, some flowers in a vase. But then, somehow, my evil, detail-loving twin took over and turned it into a big deal painting, with lots going on... Then she left, leaving me to deal with the mess. My evil twin really loves a painting with a story, so I know there is one here. Unfortunately she left without telling us this story, so you will have to provide one of your own. Need I say it? This piece was painted in fun!

This study of sunlight and shade is from a street in Southern Florida. I traveled there with   The Virtual Paintout - a website that invites artists to draw and paint from the Google Street View.  After Hurricane Irma swept through the southern part of Florida, it seemed like a good idea to revisit the are to see it in pre-hurricane shape.  I found this dark and shady corner, and saw the possibilities for a goood painting. You can see this street corner yourself by clicking here.

Spotlight Artist

The Daily Paintworks blog, Daily Paintworks News is promoting my work on their "Spotlight Artists" feature. It is an honor and I am grateful.

The Daily Paintworks is an online gallery and art auction site, and their blog gives a more in-depth profile of selected artists. There is an interview with me, and a selection of my paintings for viewers to enjoy. The Sunflowers' Song

It seems like every picture of sunflowers has its own story - you could call it a song. Some are happy and full of hope, others express the power of beauty, while others might convey a feeling of poignancy. No matter how you think about them, they seem to symbolize great emotion. Rarely are sunflowers depicted as “just flowers.” While I feel differently about sunflowers at different times, they always attract me - to grow, to display, and to paint. What these sunflowers sing to me is a song with a little of everything in it. A happy melodic tune that ascends to sweet, high notes, but then turns down to catch some minor chords, reminding me that in so much beauty, there is often a hint of sadness. But perhaps that’s just me. I hope you find a worthy tune that plays in your head when you look at this painting.

Laundry Day on the River

The Matanza River flows thorough the southern edge of Buenos Aires on it’s way to the Rio de la Plata and from there to the South Atlantic Ocean. Buenos Aries is where The Virtual Paintout has traveled this month, and using Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if they were standing right there. I found this quiet corner of the river where it seemed as if everybody was doing their wash. It seemed so calm and peaceful, and unhurried that I thought I would just set up my virtual easel and paint the colorful laundry, the slow moving river and this very unusual fence. It all has such a charming feel to it, which you can see for yourself by clicking here.

"Temple Ruins"

When the Virtual Paintout decided to explore the island of Malta, I knew I would be checking out the aerchological sites. The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge, where we use Google Street View to paint or draw the local landscape. Malta is one of the oldest civilized islands in the Mediterranean. It has aercheological excavations dating as far back as the Stone Age, and this site, Tas Silg, dates from about 3500BC. to about 350A.D., with one temple being built on top of another.  I decided to paint here, because I was facinated by what these buildings might have been like,  and the contrast between these old blocks and the quiet, timeless landscape around them. 

Done in acrylics, I wanted this piece to have the feel of a visitor sitting there and sketching what they saw. You can see it yourself here

Porch Flowers

This is a plein air painting as the flowers were outside on the front porch, and I stood in the doorway painting them. That was how the light was best. The dappled afternoon sunlight raked across the street, the yard, onto the porch and then on the flowers. And that is what this painting is all about - begonias on a table, yes, but really the effects of the afternoon light. I hope I’ve caught that!

These flowers were found in Retalhuleu, Guatemala, near the Pacific coast. Guatemala is where The Virtual Paintout has gone this month, and participating artists use Google Street View to paint or draw the landscape. I found these flowers on a street corner, and felt they would make a good subject for a painting,I hope you think so, too. They are of an unknown variety (unknown to me, that is) and if you know what they are, please let me know. You can see them for yourself by clicking here.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.  It is painted with a mix of acrylics and oils, as I wanted to contrast the lushness of the flowers with the dry dusty feel of the city behind it.

Why call it "Modern Tulips”?  Like many of my paintings, this piece started much different than it ended up! Originally, it was supposed to be a traditional piece, some tulips in a vase. But it soon became a study of how the colors work together - the darks and lights, cool colors next to warm ones, how the eye moves around the painting, and the texture of the painting surface itself. The style of the painting became as important as the subject it portrayed, and thus its title.

Painted on gallery wrapped canvas, the picture continues on all sides. It is meant to hang flush against the wall and does not need framing.

“Last Night, I Dreamt of Home…”

This is a picture story. I have provided the picture, you tell this story. The Virtual Paintout has gone to South Korea this month, and artists use the Google Street View to find something interesting to paint. I came upon this huge apartment building which is home to many fine people. The dreamlike quality of the picture was was what attracted me, and the theme of this picture developed quickly. We often dream of home. I used iridescent paints and simple shapes to encourage the dream like quality. You can where I painted for yourself by clicking here.

"Bob's Iris"

Our long time but far-away friend, Bob, decided he wanted a painting of mine. Bob is a writer, musician, journalist, seeker of truth and justice, and kind hearted soul. I think Bob is an unsung hero, but I also think his usual taste in art runs from abstract expressionism to famous jazz album covers, so when he said he wanted one of my paintings, I was pretty surprised and flattered. We searched through all my pieces to find something he would like, but the only one he found was a painting that had sold years ago.  I decided I would just repaint it for him, but bigger this time.  I really do not repaint paintings - it never seems  to work - but Bob is special, and I thought it was worth it to try and please him. So I began a painting, and what emerged was far from what I was planning. I liked the painting, but I knew it was not right for Bob.

 I sent him a picture when it was nearly done, saying "this is what I have for you.” “Fine” he said, "send it on.” Now, I should say that Bob is very adept with words, and that was just the wrong answer. That piece, my work, is better than fine, “ fine"  is just not good enough for me. But then he wrote: “I thought the bottom was part of the painting, and I got all excited. Then I saw that it was just your easel." 

So I went and looked at my easel, and... it was a mess! It has smears, slashes, splotches, paint from twenty years worth of work. And then the proverbial light went on in my head. I went to work making a painting that was as chaotic as possible. Here are some details.

It must be said that I am not a chaotic person, but that was what I tried to create. I smeared, splashed and gouged on the paint, using knives, fingers and dirty brushes, anything that seemed right at the moment. And here’s the thing, the very best thing: I loved it. I had the most wonderful time. I invited chaos into the workplace and it was wonderful. For that and so many other reasons,  I love this painting. 

I wrote Bob when it was finished, and said “Here it is, but you don’t have to have it, no hard feelings!" (I was really hoping he wouldn’t like it, so I could keep it.) But no, he loved it, so it's his now, and I am forever grateful that he helped me to see  this new way of painting.

Morning Light

This month, the Virtual Paintout has traveled to Tunisia. Using the Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if we were all there. I traveled around until I found some early morning sunlight peeking up over the buildings (to see it yourself, click here). When a scene could become a painting, you can just see it in your head. I saw one in this view of the morning sunlight!

Spring Song

Well, it’s spring - finally! The Spring flowers came into bloom but are now are leaving us. Can one show how quickly they come and go using paint and brush? It's part of the whole  “flower story” so it seems right to include that, while showing the idea of how beautiful they are, even in memory. The “minimalistic” approach felt right for this painting, putting in just the basics - flowers, stems and vase. I hope you like it!

Flame Tree

Ghana was the destination for The Virtual Paintout this month. Using Google Street View to find a place we might paint or draw, we travel around looking for just the right spot. I found this scene on Tema-Jasiken Road in eastern Ghana where the flame trees were coming into bloom. The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge using Google Street View to paint or draw at a chosen location (somewhere around the globe). This month we are in Nashville, Tennessee. Using the little peg-man, I traveled around downtown and then to parts beyond, looking for a scene that I could relate to. I came across this little produce stand, which also seems to sell plants and flowers. It looked like the perfect spot for me to paint - a charming little place - half garden, half small business, and completely picturesque. Small businesses like this one are what give character to the community. You can see what I mean by clicking the location, here!

This is an imaginary landscape, made from slathering on favorite colors with knife and brush, working up textures and adding lines till there was "something". I really didn't know how it would all come together, but eventually a scene developed. I like the feeling of calm and mystery; it turned out well.

Using Google Street View as a reference, The Virtual Paintout, an art challenge, goes around the world, painting or drawing at selected locations. This month we are in Puerto Rico. So with the street view, I wondered around cities and beaches, until I found this wonderful little house all decorated with stars, moons and other objects d’art. This little house is so picturesque and charming, it seemed right to paint it like an illustration in a story - I can imagine a story here, can’t you?  I only changed it a little, as you can see by clicking here.
