A Cloudy Sky
14 x 11"   Oil on Canvas
The Daily Paintworks Auctions
$95

Sometime, you just need to paint the landscape. You need to paint the trees - the clouds and grass and a horizon that goes on forever. I wanted to paint all those things, but I wanted to paint with texture and cragginess, not just the look of the landscape, but the feel of it as well. I wanted the feel of those clouds moving in.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed or it could be hung up on the wall just as it is. I am happy to put a wire on back.

"Left Behind"12 x 9"  Acrylic on CanvasThe Daily Paintworks Auctionsstarting bid:  $75
The Virtual Paintout, an art blog challenge which uses Google Street View to paint or draw a given landscape site, has traveled to the island of Hashima, off the coast of Japan. Hashima is an abandoned mining town (island), once home to many, but a tourist site and ruin now, a perfect place for the scary month of Halloween!

I found this wall, by the shore where some scarfs had been left behind. And what is that red object? It looks very much like a bowl - and supports the feeling of abandonment and mystery that pervades the island. You can visit this site and decide what you think by clicking here!

Morning Light
9  x 12 ” oil on canvas
 $75

This month, the Virtual Paintout has traveled to Tunisia. Using the Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if we were all there. I traveled around until I found some early morning sunlight peeking up over the buildings (to see it yourself, click here). When a scene could become a painting, you can just see it in your head. I saw one in this view of the morning sunlight!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Full Bloom
9x12”  oil on canvas

This was painted for The Virtual Paintout which is a painting challenge that uses Google Street View at a different location each month to paint or draw the landscape as if you were really there. This month we visited the Balkan country of Montenegro. On the Adriatic coast, it has mountains and harbors, old towns and new developments. However, what really caught my eye was this wonderful flowering tree in full bloom. (You can see it here.)  It provided such beautiful color, and created such pleasant shade in the yard, it seems like a perfect place to live, and was certainly a pleasant place to paint!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Roadside Trees
12 x 9 ”  oil on canvas
starting bid:  $75

Norway was the destination for The Virtual Paintout this month. Using the Google Street View, artists are invited to paint or draw the local landscape of a chosen area. There are as many different approaches to the task as there are artists. It’s always fun to see what others have come up with, and there is some really nice artwork this month as always.

I found this wooded area on one of the many islands that make up the Norwegian coast, and thought to depict it in a rustic way, leaning a bit towards the abstract. You can see where I painted - using brush and palette knife - by clicking here

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas, you can frame it, but you can also hang it up just as it is.

Mid-Day Sun
9" x 12"   oil on canvas
The Daily Paintworks  $75

This piece was painted for the The Virtual Paintout. We artists tour a pre-designated area, and using Google Street View, find something we'd like to paint or draw. The island of Sri Lanka was the chosen destination for this month.  I found my spot not far from the port, in the city of Colombo - this street is called Sri Gunananda Mawatha.  Though it is actually a bustling little area, I made things slow down a bit to when the day’s heat would impose a kind of quiet, so that sun and shadow would be the key players here.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up, just as it is.

Autumn Woods
12" x 16"  oil on canvas
sold

This is my tribute to the fall landscape, which has not actually happened here in drought-stricken California. I worked from a photograph taken in late summer at Stevens' Creek Park in Cupertino, and just let the image - and color - come out as it wanted.  I like it, I hope you do, too.

Old Oak at the Annex
Cuesta Park Annex
14" x 18"  oil on canvas
nfs

This is an older piece, which I have placed up for auction. When I painted it, the future of this park (in Mountain View, seemed to be in question, with many of the trees - like this one- slated for removal. Through much effort on the part of the community, plans were changed and the annex (a "wild" part of a big city park) has been left as it is. It is a wonderful little piece of the California landscape left just as it is.

Highway 211, Utah
9”x 12”   oil
$75

This month, the Virtual Paintout has gone to Utah. Using Google Street View, we travel around looking for something to paint or draw. I found this quiet route through the mountains in Southern Utah which had the red, rocky mountains, contrasting with the lush greenery from nearby Indian Creek. It seemed a great place to stop and paint awhile, virtually speaking! This seemed like a good subject for some pallet knife painting, and so I did! It is thick with impasto paint!

The Sunflower Plot
Willowgate Community Garden
9" x 12"  oil on board
Daily Paintworks
sold

Summer always brings out the best in each gardener's efforts at the community garden. While many people grow a variety of things in their plots, others grow a lot of just a few things. This plot seems given to sunflowers, zinnias and the remains of some artichokes.  They all fit together nicely, and begged to be painted; it was hot, but a real pleasure to stand there and paint them. This piece was started out in the garden but finished in the studio - when I went back to paint, most of the flowers had been cut down!

Blue Moon
9” x 12” oil
 $75

I went out to get the laundry and this is what I saw. Evening was coming on, there was a kind of mauve and violet light all around, and the moon - a blue moon - was rising up in the evening sky. The sun had not set yet, but the sky was overcast and cloudy, sort of a gentle ocher color. The moon, huge, luminous and grand, was a magical and mystical presence up in the evening sky.  It was unexpected so early, but very welcome and oh so beautiful!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas,  it can be framed nicely, or hung up just as it is.

Southwest Sunrise
9” x 12” oil
The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge, where one uses Google Street View in a pre-chosen destination to depict people and places there. And it is a challenge - to find one scene out of so many that interest you - using the unwieldy new google street view - but fun none the less. This month we are in Sante Fe, New Mexico. I chose this scene because I like how the early morning sun raked across the land, casting shadows onto that house with those blue window frames. I could imagine myself standing out there painting it.

This piece is painted on all side of the canvas,  it can be framed or hung up just as it is.

Snake Pond,
Cape Cod
Acrylic on canvas,  9" x 12"
gifted

The Virtual Paintout is visiting Cape Cod, Massachusetts this month - this is a painting challenge using Google Street View. I toured around  until I found this nice place  by this big pond. Then I thought about it for a while – how could I make this picture fun and just a little different....   Well, as you can see, it was a lot of fun and it is a bit different, certainly for me!  You can see where I painted by clicking here!

This painting was painted on all sides of the canvas. You can frame it or hang it just as it is.

Venice at Night
9" x 12"  acrylic on canvas
 sold

Finally! Google maps recently added new sites to their street view, and The Virtual Paintout has at last visited La Serenissima!  Venice, it's not only serene, but beautiful! I can't say enough about the beauty of Venice, the sunrises and sunsets, but also how magical it is by moonlight!

In Town
Akranes, West Iceland
9" x 12"   oil on canvas
 nfs

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Iceland this month to do some painting and drawing.  A Nordic  island country that has vast landscapes, high peaks and (obviously) lots of ocean views. All wonderful subjects for the landscape painter, and many have done a fine job, as you can see. However, it was this bright sunny neighborhood that caught my eye. I was in a mood to paint houses, I guess, and this house with its tall peak roof and high steps, the cart in the yard and all that sunshine just caught my eye. I just put some flowers in that pot on the steps!

This painting is painted on all sides, so it can be framed , or hung  just as it is.

The Mill Pond
9" x 12" oil on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout traveled to the Isle of Wight this month, a small island in the English Channel. Using the Google Maps Street View, I looked here and there until I found this picturesque little area, just begging to be painted. The scene itself reminded me of a Constable painting! I've called it the Mill Pond, though I'm not sure it really is one, just looked like it to me. See what you think by clicking here.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed up, or hung as is.

Sao Bras Ahead
Azores Islands, Portugal
11" x 14"  oil on canvas
$75

The Virtual Paintout is touring around The Azore Islands off the coast of Portugal this month - there are many fine paintings so far. I stopped to paint this stand of trees on the road to Sao Bras. I was taken by the lacy pattern their branches made against the sky.

You can see more of my work by going to my Gallery page at The Daily Paintworks.

This piece is painted on all sides of this canvas. It can be framed, or it could be hung, just as is.

Trees of Heaven
12" x 16" oil on canvas
$ 80

I love these tall trees - they have been here for a long, long time. Their canopy rises high and spreads over the neighborhood. I can see their leafy tops from my front yard, a couple of blocks away. I guess that is why they are called "Trees of Heaven," because they reach up so high in the sky. They are also pretty much doomed. They will be "removed," along with dozens of others, many of which are heritage trees, so a local developer can put high-density, high rise apartments where they are. So much for progress.

This is my first painting of them, but not my last - I have not yet caught their beauty and majesty, how their height dominates the neighborhood. I have not done them justice, but I will keep trying until I do.

This piece is painted on all sides, it can be framed up nicely, or hung just as it is.

A Day in the Country
(Bucolic Bulgaria)
oil on board   9.5" x 13"

The Virtual Paintout  travels through Bulgaria this month.  Touring around with the Google Map Street View, I looked for something I would enjoy painting. It seems like most of Bulgaria is still under the effects of winter - snow on the ground, trees yet to leaf out, the earth still asleep. I've had enough cold weather and was hungry for the sun, so when I came upon this rural area with lots of sunlight and greenery, I know I'd found my spot! I came here for the weather but stayed to paint this pleasant country road.
