The Virtual Paintout has gone to Rome! Using Google Street View, I wandered around that wonderful city looking for just the right thing to paint. I was looking for something that would go beyond the familiar sites and express my love for this city. This is what spoke to me: a big old house that looks like it has sheltered generations of family members. It feels like it’s in the country yet it is still  in the city limits. You can easily imagine Nonna in the kitchen, Nonno out in the garden, the family coming together for Sunday dinner.

This little piece is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it could be framed, or you could hang it up as it is.

Venice at Night

Finally! Google maps recently added new sites to their street view, and The Virtual Paintout has at last visited La Serenissima!  Venice, it's not only serene, but beautiful! I can't say enough about the beauty of Venice, the sunrises and sunsets, but also how magical it is by moonlight!

Country Road

This month The Virtual Paintout is visiting Lido di Iesole  just north of Venice.  It is a coastal region, and mostly caters to the tourist industry. But if you get beyond the beach cottages and hotels, you can find some old forgotten buildings like this one. I loved the peaceful feeling of this quiet corner of Venizia, it seems like it is rich in history, with many of its stories still untold (see it here).

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed - or it can be hung just as it is.

Canal Scene

In Venice, most walkways lead to a canal. Some canals are very small, coming right up to someone's back door or garden wall. Some have beautiful little bridges over them. Passing over such a canal on an elegant little bridge is where I found this quiet scene.

San Gimignano, Italy

The Olive Grove

San Gimignano, famous for its many towers, is where I "found" this painting. In recent years it has become quite the tourist town - loads of people flocking in to see the towers, visit the churches and all those cute little shops. They also come to see the stunning views. But if you stay and explore the city, you find these quiet corners, like this olive grove. I found these old olive trees beside a small community of houses, which spoke of a place where people live and work. The quality of light on this Tuscan spring day was as important to catch as the as beauty of the countryside itself.

San Gimignano, Italy

Along the Walls of San Gimignano

It's not about me for the month of June. Family concerns call me away from the easel with  no time to paint. Sigh.  So I am posting paintings of Italy done from photographs. It would be nice to be there now, even with all the summer crowds.

San Gimignano is known for it's towers, 15 of them now, but it also has these beautiful pathways around the city walls that you can walk on. There are stunning views everywhere you look, this is one of the cypress trees and their shadows in the morning sun, with the Tuscan countryside beyond.

Hilltowns of Elba

The Virtual Paintout went to Elba this month. Elba is an island off the coast of Tuscany best known for "hosting" Napoleon during his first exile. I wanted to paint something that captured Italy's unique qualities - the lush vegetation, the walled towns on so many hill tops, the old and the new side by side.
