Each morning on our walk we pass this house. With the sun coming up over the trees the side yard gets lit up and becomes a work of art, a harmony of greens and violets with the occasional dash of orange - a symphony of  secondary colors. But the apricot tree here, old and venerable, is the star of this show.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but it can be hung up just as it is. I am happy to put  a wire on back.

It seems like when you walk through a wooded area, the branches rise up, crossing overhead, joining together to create a kind of cathedral, a church made of nature. That was the idea behind this scene. It reflects my "inner landscape." It's a journey of color and light - all is vivid around me. (It may speak to you the same way.)

         

This piece is painted on gallery-wrapped canvas and continues on all sides of the canvas. It is meant to hang flush against the wall and does not need further framing - unless you want. It comes with a wire on back, and is ready to hang.

The Rising Moon

This painting (straight out of my imagination) started as a "paint dump" -  a way to use up excess paint. When I have too much paint at the end of a session, I ply it on an extra canvas. At some point an image or idea takes shape and I work with it. It's one of my favorite ways of painting. No rules, no constraints, just see what happens while not wasting paint. I'll bet many artists do this.

As the images began to take shape and I began to see a story - the moon rising over a distant land, like something in an old adventure where something compelling is about to happen. It's that quiet moment before excitement begins! 

Before it was finished it was sold, and then, thinking about the people who bought it, I was able to finish off the details with them in mind. They are some of my favorite people, so it was really a lot of fun!

"Moonlit"

The Virtual Paintout is traveling again! Using Google Street View artists are invited to visit a chosen location and paint or draw the local landscape. The destination this month is the US Virgin Islands. Traveling around the main island, St. Croix to Frederiksted, I was intrigued by the juxtaposition of old remnants (practically ruins) right next to new and well-kept buildings. Case in point is this old stone structure with its arched portico directly across the street from the impressive bell tower of St. Paul's Anglican Church. Quite a contrast. I am not sure if this is building is important or not, but it gave me the idea for this painting. The whole scene looks even better in moonlight! (You can see it for yourself if you click here.)

Canadian Holiday

This painting is from a photograph I took while visiting Victoria, BC, a few years ago. It was a short visit so I had no idea exactly where we might be, except at a cottage by the water. This scene has kept my interest - it has a nice layout and a nice feel - so I have always wanted to paint it.

This piece is painted on canvas with a plain black border around the sides. You can frame it, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Laundry Day on the River

The Matanza River flows thorough the southern edge of Buenos Aires on it’s way to the Rio de la Plata and from there to the South Atlantic Ocean. Buenos Aries is where The Virtual Paintout has traveled this month, and using Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if they were standing right there. I found this quiet corner of the river where it seemed as if everybody was doing their wash. It seemed so calm and peaceful, and unhurried that I thought I would just set up my virtual easel and paint the colorful laundry, the slow moving river and this very unusual fence. It all has such a charming feel to it, which you can see for yourself by clicking here.

"Temple Ruins"

When the Virtual Paintout decided to explore the island of Malta, I knew I would be checking out the aerchological sites. The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge, where we use Google Street View to paint or draw the local landscape. Malta is one of the oldest civilized islands in the Mediterranean. It has aercheological excavations dating as far back as the Stone Age, and this site, Tas Silg, dates from about 3500BC. to about 350A.D., with one temple being built on top of another.  I decided to paint here, because I was facinated by what these buildings might have been like,  and the contrast between these old blocks and the quiet, timeless landscape around them. 

Done in acrylics, I wanted this piece to have the feel of a visitor sitting there and sketching what they saw. You can see it yourself here

This is an imaginary landscape, made from slathering on favorite colors with knife and brush, working up textures and adding lines till there was "something". I really didn't know how it would all come together, but eventually a scene developed. I like the feeling of calm and mystery; it turned out well.

A Walk in Fauve Woods

The inspiration for this piece came from a trail at Stevens Creek Park in Cupertino, Ca. where we were hiking.  I knew this scene would make a great painting, so I snapped a picture. Other projects came first, so I just let the photo sit, until I had the time to paint it. How to paint it was then the question – whether to use realism, or let my imagination loose and paint it "creatively." Slowly, I began to see the scene in a Fauve style. Here’s a picture of what it really looks like. As you can see, I only changed it a little!

The painting covers all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is; it would look nice that way, too.

A Perfect Day

The Virtual Paintout - an art challenge using Google Street View - has gone to Cambodia this month. I toured around villages, jungles, farms and cities looking for the best place to paint. I happened upon this lonely road on a stunningly beautiful day. It was so perfect, just as it is, that all I had to do was capture it. That was the challenge. The Old Gate

I love this gate, don’t you? The Virtual Paintout has gone to Majorca, the island off the coast of Spain for the month of February.  Using Google Street View we artists travel around looking for something that strikes our fancy to paint or draw. I decided to go out into the countryside to find something noteworthy for my piece. And I found it here with this old gate - at least I think it’s old, it seems to stand alone without a fence. Whatever, I thought it was a wonderful spot, with that bush coming into bloom, those old buildings, and that big field. It all evokes a sense of timelessness. The Wild Woods

The Virtual Paintout has gone to the Monterey Peninsula to do some drawing and painting. Using Google Street View, we select a scene that appeals to us and try and capture it - via the magic of the internet and our artistic efforts!

I love the Virtual Paintout because it gives me a chance to experiment with different styles and colors,  to paint pieces I might normally never think to do. While I doubt very much I would stand in this little woods and paint this scene like I have here, it was fun to try it, and play around a bit!  Český Houses

Český Krumlov, Czech Republic

The Virtual Paintout is traveling around the Czech Republic. Using the Google Street View, we have toured the city of Český Krumlov.  Just outside the city center, I found this charming neighborhood where the rooftops were as numerous as the gardens and trees. What a pleasant place to visit or live!

Himalayan Roadway

Bhutan was our destination, when The Virtual Paintout went traveling this month. Using Google Street View, we go around a chosen destination looking for something to paint or draw. I found this scenic vista, near Narphu, way up in the mountains. At the top of the world, it seems like. Between prayer flags and road side temples, there were places of complete beauty. Bangladesh was the destination for The Virtual Paintout this month. Using Google Street View I traveled around trying to find the perfect site to paint. There were so many of them! This is a country rich in color and vegetation, with so many fascinating people and scenes to paint. I settled on this one because I liked the way the sun and shadows played across the yard, laundry and green house.

Giant Sycamore

What a pleasure it is to paint a pretty little landscape such as this, even if it’s from a photograph. This giant is a sycamore, one of many at McClellen Ranch Park  where we were hiking - with me taking lots of pictures. Those pictures come in handy when you have an urge to paint a landscape but the weather has turned cold and rainy.

The Virtual Paintout, an art challenge using Google Maps Street View, is traveling through the city of Gothenburg, this month. While many artist have depicted the city and it's citizens,  I felt the need for some landscape painting, so I traveled out into the countryside. I found these lovely stretches of golden fields and green meadows. It was so serene, and the landscape had so much color, I just had to stop and paint! Old House, Shui Tou Village

This month, The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Kineman Island off the coast of China. The island has a rich history, and has made some of its old villages into attractions for people to visit. I came across this ancient house and decided to paint it - I feel certain there are many stories within these walls. It is in the middle of Shuitou Village, a landmark and tourist attraction full of historical buildings. Rosy-fingered Dawn

The Virtual Paintout is in Greece this month, and while there are many fine works depicting the whitewashed houses and church domes against an azure sea, I wanted to find something of legends and myths - but not too obvious. I resorted to the Homeric epic:

"When the child of morning, rosy-fingered Dawn, appeared, we admired the island and wandered all over it..." 

From Chapter 9 of Homer's "Odyssey," this quote seemed to sum up perfectly what this painting is about... the scene itself is on the island of Lesbos, and seems to capture a sense of timelessness. It might be dawn, today, or it might be a dawn three thousand years ago.
