Shadows Along the Trail
9 x 12"   Acrylic on Canvas
starting bid: $99

Walking along the Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View, the trees are dense and sheltering. The sun filters through the canopy and gives a dappled appearance to the shadows below. Beyond that, the sun is brilliant on the scrub grass and small bushes that lead down to the creek. In drought years like this, it is all rather dry.

This painting covers all sides of the canvas. You can frame it, certainly, but you can also hang it up just as it is. I'm happy to put a wire on the back.

Fall Color
9 x 12”    Oil on Canvas

The seasons are slow to change here in Mountain View, where I live. So although winter is less than a week away, the fall color has the trees ablaze. This view is the from the parking lot of my bank, and though I have stood right there, I did not see this - a scene waiting to be painted - until a friend sent me a picture he had taken with his camera! Thank you, Paul!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Late Spring at the Annex
20 x 16"  oil on canvas
The Daily Paintworks
$295

On August 9th and 10th, I am featured on Keith Linwood Stover's The Cyber Art Show. This is an online gallery that showcases  landscape works of a variety of very accomplished artists. The styles and countries they come from differ, but the work is always excellent. It's an honor to be included.  Thank you, Keith!

I hope you will take time to look at the many artists he exhibits there in his Daily Exhibitions. In addition to the Cyber Art Show, he also shares the work of different artists on his Facebook page, and any post of his is worth stopping to take a look at for the beauty and excellent craftsmanship displayed there.

“Last Night, I Dreamt of Home…”
9 x 12 ” Acrylic on canvas
 nfs

This is a picture story. I have provided the picture, you tell this story. The Virtual Paintout has gone to South Korea this month, and artists use the Google Street View to find something interesting to paint. I came upon this huge apartment building which is home to many fine people. The dreamlike quality of the picture was was what attracted me, and the theme of this picture developed quickly. We often dream of home. I used iridescent paints and simple shapes to encourage the dream like quality. You can where I painted for yourself by clicking here.

Painted in acrylic with a dark border, it can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is, too.

Mc Neil's Produce
9 x 12 "  Acrylic on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge using Google Street View to paint or draw at a chosen location (somewhere around the globe). This month we are in Nashville, Tennessee. Using the little peg-man, I traveled around downtown and then to parts beyond, looking for a scene that I could relate to. I came across this little produce stand, which also seems to sell plants and flowers. It looked like the perfect spot for me to paint - a charming little place - half garden, half small business, and completely picturesque. Small businesses like this one are what give character to the community. You can see what I mean by clicking the location, here!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Early Moon
12 x 9 "  oil on canvas
gifted

The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge which uses Google Street View and visits a new location to paint or draw the landscape each month. It encourages creative changes in a picture, as long as you stick to the street view as a reference. This month we have gone to Tijuana, Mexico.  I found this hillside with the sun shining directly into the camera, and knew I could make many creative changes. (You can see the original site by clicking here.) I had a lot of fun working with the landscape shapes and the colors, using artistic license to get exactly what I wanted.

The paint covers all sides of this canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is; it would look nice that way, too.

Red Earth
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to New South Wales this month for some drawing and painting. Using Google Street View, we depict local scenes that appeal to us. I went outside Byrock, and found this lovely scene. This shade of red earth may be more intense when it's cloudy or rainy, like when Google took the street view pictures. But this scene, these colors, were what I really wanted to paint, and perhaps I used a bit of artistic license! Maybe someday I will get the chance to travel there and paint the landscape from real life! (Click here to see where I painted!)

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up, just as it is.

Light Rail Stop
9x12  oil on panel

The light rail train sits at the transit station in Mountain View, where I live. The bright green trees and cool shadows contrast perfectly with the lovely violet blooms of the jacaranda tree, presenting a picturesque little scene.

This song played over and over in my head as I stood out there painting, I'll share it with you because it's just so beautiful. "The Train Leaves at Eight" by Mikis Theodorakis.

This  painting is on linen wrapped panel.

Motor Car Tune Up
9” x 12”  oil on canvas
 $75

It was the angles and layers, the contrast between the squares and rounds, buildings and trees, sun and shadow that caught my eye and made me want to paint this scene. But this is also a little slice of history.  This auto shop was once one of many. The whole area, east of the tracks, was home to car repairs, fast food joints and bars. But all that has changed rapidly. Mountain View is now home to Google, LinkedIn, and more start-ups than you can count. Facebook is up the road a little. Which means the sleepy town that once was has changed into a bustling new empire, and shops (such as this) are being replaced with everything upscale. The old buildings are mostly memories now.

Motor Car Tune Up was run by a friendly, honest mechanic, Angie. He was here for decades, and everybody liked him. It seems right to paint this - to remember the “old Mountain View”, and how it used to be.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it can be framed, or hung up just as it is.

The Advent of Spring
11’ x 14” oil on canvas

The first blossoms each year are on this almond tree on a well kept corner of Shorline Boulevard, in Mountain View, where I live.  This old tree always blooms first, and gives me great hope for warmer days and the coming year ahead!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it can be framed, or hung up just as it is.

Mountain Shadows
Chile, Southern Parks Region
9" x 12"  acrylic on canvas
$75.

Using Google Street View, The  Virtual Paintout is touring the southern parks region of Chile this month. I started going up and through the Andes, along the highway. The sun was just coming up, and one mountain cast its shadow over the highway and onto the other mountain - except at the top, which was in brilliant sunlight. I loved how the shrubs looked like trees, the trees looked like giants and everything around me was in cool shadow. You can see it here!

This piece is painted on all sides, you can frame it up, or you can hang it, just as it is.

Country Road
11" x 14" acrylic on canvas
 $75

This month The Virtual Paintout is visiting Lido di Iesole  just north of Venice.  It is a coastal region, and mostly caters to the tourist industry. But if you get beyond the beach cottages and hotels, you can find some old forgotten buildings like this one. I loved the peaceful feeling of this quiet corner of Venizia, it seems like it is rich in history, with many of its stories still untold (see it here).

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed - or it can be hung just as it is.
