La Casa Vecchia
Rome, Italy
9” x 12” oil on canvas
starting bid:  $75

The Virtual Paintout has gone to Rome! Using Google Street View, I wandered around that wonderful city looking for just the right thing to paint. I was looking for something that would go beyond the familiar sites and express my love for this city. This is what spoke to me: a big old house that looks like it has sheltered generations of family members. It feels like it’s in the country yet it is still  in the city limits. You can easily imagine Nonna in the kitchen, Nonno out in the garden, the family coming together for Sunday dinner.

This little piece is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it could be framed, or you could hang it up as it is.

Giant Sycamore
8 x 10”   oil on canvas

What a pleasure it is to paint a pretty little landscape such as this, even if it’s from a photograph. This giant is a sycamore, one of many at McClellen Ranch Park  where we were hiking - with me taking lots of pictures. Those pictures come in handy when you have an urge to paint a landscape but the weather has turned cold and rainy.

This little painting is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it could be framed, or you could hang it up, just as it is.

A Garden in Terrace
Anne and Bruce’s Garden
12” x 24”  o/c
a gift

Sometimes, the best thing about being an artist is that you can escape the bustle of a wedding kitchen and slip out into the garden to paint. I had just such luck on a recent, happy visit to Canada.  The quiet of Anne and Bruce’s prolific garden called me away from wedding preparations - but even the flowers were being whisked away for table decorations as I painted them.

This is the finished painting of that garden in Terrace, B.C., and it is meant to be a happy reminder of important occasion in their lives. I only had a short amount of time to do the study and a limited palate of acrylic paint, so the finished piece is quite a bit different than the study (published earlier, but shown again below).

Cityscape
Wiltz, Luxembourg
9” x 12”  mixed-media on board

The Virtual Paintout has visited Luxembourg this month. I liked this spot in Wiltz because it had lots of peaked roofs, old buildings, and a sense of history. How to paint it. It seemed more appropriate as a drawing, but I’m a painter. So, I compromised -  a little painting a little drawing, a lot of precision. And that was a challenge. But I had fun doing it, and I hope you enjoy looking at it!

Remnants of Summer
8” x 10”  oil on canvas
$75.

Nine feet from my backdoor, I pass this little scene daily. The heavy drought and long lasting summery weather have left a little of what was here before - it was lush in summer.  I have always meant to paint it, but never got around to it. But then there was a painting challenge on facebook (here's the link). Greg Summers (a terrific artist) hosts the occasional challenge, and this one is “Looking Out My Back Door”.  I love challenges like this, all entries are unique and special in their own way, and I get to see how other people paint where they live.

This piece is painted on all sides - it can be framed, or you can just hang it, as it is.

A Garden in Terrace, the study
(Anne and Bruce's Garden)
7" x 11"  acrylic on board

This is a study for a bigger piece. It was painted at the end of summer on a family visit to Canada. While everybody else prepared for a wedding, I slipped away with my paintbox. Terrace is located in western-central BC, with a much different landscape than ours in California. It's in a rainforest, and everything was lush and green, even at the end of summer. I was happy to get a chance to paint, even if it was just out in the backyard!

Super Moon Over Ross Castle
County Kerry, Ireland
9" x 12"  oil on canvas

The Virtual Paintout went to County Kerry in Ireland this month to paint the sites using Google Street View. I found this old castle with its ruined tower and reflections in the lake, and I wondered how it would look during a supermoon. I just imagined it would look something like this... quite magical, don't you think? Of course you can see it by day, and even tour the castle if you click here.

This painting is painted on all sides of the canvas - it can be nicely framed, or hung up just as it is.

Country Road,
South of Gothenburg, Sweden
9" x 12" o/c
$75

The Virtual Paintout, an art challenge using Google Maps Street View, is traveling through the city of Gothenburg, this month. While many artist have depicted the city and it's citizens,  I felt the need for some landscape painting, so I traveled out into the countryside. I found these lovely stretches of golden fields and green meadows. It was so serene, and the landscape had so much color, I just had to stop and paint! You can see for yourself how beautiful it was by clicking here!

This little painting is painted on all sides of the canvas, so it could be framed, or you could hang it up, just as it is.

August Moon
9" x 12 " oil on canvas

I love summer. It is the best time, the sunflowers are blooming, the tomatoes and melons are ripe. At night you can hear the crickets chirping so loud you'd think they own the place. The earthy smell of grass and the garden fill the air with a perfume that cannot be detected during the day when car exhaust predominates. And the big August moon - the Sturgeon Moon - although this year it was called the super moon, rises over a peaceful backyard kingdom.

This piece is painted on all sides - it can be framed, or you can just hang it, as it is.

Old House, Shui Tou Village
Kinman Island, Taiwan
9" x 12" acrylic on canvas
The Daily Paintworks, $75.

This month, The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Kineman Island off the coast of China. The island has a rich history, and has made some of its old villages into attractions for people to visit. I came across this ancient house and decided to paint it - I feel certain there are many stories within these walls. It is in the middle of Shuitou Village, a landmark and tourist attraction full of historical buildings. You can see where I painted by clicking here, and you can explore the village yourself by clicking here.

This piece is painted on all sides - it can be framed, or you can just hang it, as it is.

Summer Flower Fun
12" x 16" oil on canvas

This is a painting thick with paint, and rich in color. That was my mission - to use lots of paint, and change colors often for variation and energy. In short, I wanted to have fun making it, and I want the viewer to have fun looking at it.

This piece is painted on all sides - it can be framed, or you can just hang it, as it is.

Rosy-fingered Dawn
9" x 12"   oil on canvas
Daily Paintworks, $75.

The Virtual Paintout is in Greece this month, and while there are many fine works depicting the whitewashed houses and church domes against an azure sea, I wanted to find something of legends and myths - but not too obvious. I resorted to the Homeric epic:
"When the child of morning, rosy-fingered Dawn, appeared, we admired the island and wandered all over it..."
From Chapter 9 of Homer's "Odyssey," this quote seemed to sum up perfectly what this painting is about... the scene itself is on the island of Lesbos, and seems to capture a sense of timelessness. It might be dawn, today, or it might be a dawn three thousand years ago.

This piece is painted on all sides, it can be framed if you like, or you can just hang it up as it is.

724 Central
(Late Afternoon Light)
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
nfs

Is it the artist's job to find beauty in everyday things, or is that person an artist because they want to share the beauty they see around them?

It's hard to know why an ordinary, not very old or fancy scene would attract my eye, but this one did. Perhaps it was the slanting late afternoon light on the trees and buildings. Maybe it was just that this place, like so many others around Mountain View (where I live) is existing on borrowed time, and I wanted to paint it before everything changes.  724 Central used to be part of "Motor Car Tune-Up," a local business run by a friendly, honest mechanic named Angie. People came to get their cars fixed, but stayed to visit because Angie was such a good guy. Well, the years have passed, and so has Angie, but the building is still there, empty now, but full of memories of how it used to be.

This piece is painted on all sides; it can be framed if you like, or you can just hang it up as it is.

Little House Near Amur Bay,
Primorskiy Kray, Russia
9" x 12"   oil on canvas
 $75.

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Vladivostok, Russia and to the region south of it, Primorskiy Kray, this month. Using Google Maps Street View, we stop to paint the local landscape when we find something that interests us. I found this little house in a place called Kanal, not far from Amur Bay. (The link is here.) I loved the look of it, with its big windows and waterfront views. It seemed like the thing everyone would want to have, a little house by the sea!

This piece is painted on all sides; you can frame it up, or you can hang it, just as it is.

 Mid-afternoon on Moffett
9" x 12"    oil on canvas
$75

Anybody who has sat in traffic, waiting for the train to go by so they could get into downtown Mountain View,  will recognize this scene. Moffett Blvd. has long been an unimposing route to our downtown, but that is all changing. The low, modest buildings are on their way out so that a high-rise, high-rent complex can be built. Gone will be the old social service building and an old garage next to it, along with those tall beautiful trees and the "mountain view" behind them. Fortunately the building on the corner - once Joe's Auto Supply, is still here (for now). I wanted to paint this scene so people around here might look at the painting one day and say  "...yeah, I remember how it used to be!"

This piece is painted on all sides — it can be framed, or you can just hang it, as it is.

 Gardens Gone Wild!
11" x 14" oil on canvas
 $99

This garden is out of control!  Remnants of spring flowers ramble along beside the early poppies creating chaos and color. I should put down the brushes, and go for the clippers to bring a bit of order to this place — but I just don't think that is going to happen! Where some people will spend their time planting and pruning their garden, getting it all neat and tidy, others will spend that time painting it!

This piece is painted on all sides - it can be framed, or you can just hang it as it is.

Mountain Shadows
Chile, Southern Parks Region
9" x 12"  acrylic on canvas
$75.

Using Google Street View, The  Virtual Paintout is touring the southern parks region of Chile this month. I started going up and through the Andes, along the highway. The sun was just coming up, and one mountain cast its shadow over the highway and onto the other mountain - except at the top, which was in brilliant sunlight. I loved how the shrubs looked like trees, the trees looked like giants and everything around me was in cool shadow. You can see it here!

This piece is painted on all sides, you can frame it up, or you can hang it, just as it is.

Double Delights
12" x 12"  x1.5 " oil on canvas
$150

The roses have bloomed in my yard, and the most stunning were the Double Delights. Those are cream colored roses with bright red edging. The first blooms are always so lush and abundant!

This piece was painted on wrap-around canvas, 1.5" thick, with paint covering all sides. It hangs flush against the wall, so it does not need framed, but you could, anyway!

You may purchase this painting by simply clicking here, or email me, my address in on your left. Thank you.
