The Virtual Paintout

Spiky Bridge, Swansea
9.5" x 13"  oil on board
$75.

This month, The Virtual Paintout is traveling around Tasmania, the big island just south of Australia. Riding the highway via the Google maps, I came upon this interesting bridge, purely by chance. Built in 1843, it was built of local stone by convict labor. Jagged, spiky rocks were used on the sides of the bridge, but the reason why remains unclear - some say for decoration, others say to keep cattle from straying off the sides. You have to agree, it's very picturesque.

The Gift
oil on wrap around canvas
12" x  12"
 sold

These wonderful gerbara daisies came to us as a gift. Planted in this nice little pot, they started as a kind thought, went on to be a table decoration and ended up as a painting! Thank you again to my family for their generosity, even if this thoughtful gift was not exactly meant for me!

This piece needs no framing - although you could, of course. Painted on all sides, it hangs flat against the wall.

This painting can be purchased by clicking on the Pypal logo, or The Daily Paintworks logo on the left. It can also be purchased as a print from Fine Art America.

Canal Scene
20" x 24"  oil on canvas
$400.

In Venice, most walkways lead to a canal. Some canals are very small, coming right up to someone's back door or garden wall. Some have beautiful little bridges over them. Passing over such a canal on an elegant little bridge is where I found this quiet scene.

San Gimignano, Italy

The Olive Grove
16" x 20"   oil on canvas
 $125.

San Gimignano, famous for its many towers, is where I "found" this painting. In recent years it has become quite the tourist town - loads of people flocking in to see the towers, visit the churches and all those cute little shops. They also come to see the stunning views. But if you stay and explore the city, you find these quiet corners, like this olive grove. I found these old olive trees beside a small community of houses, which spoke of a place where people live and work. The quality of light on this Tuscan spring day was as important to catch as the as beauty of the countryside itself.

The Virtual Paintout

River Scene
Soi Thana Sap, Bangkok, Thailand
13" x 9.5" oil on board
n/a

The Virtual Paintout is traveling through Thailand for the month of July. I was looking for a scene that would not only be fun to paint, but would also express the character of this unique country itself. I was captivated by the way the people here live right up to and on the river. Although this is a less prosperous neighborhood, I found a certain appeal to it, rustic but serene, you can see what I mean by clicking here.

Pink Peony
8" x 10"  oil on canvas
sold

This peony and her sisters are all stars in a bigger garden painting still in progress. Painting them in broad strokes made me want to study them closely, to find out exactly how they were made and how to paint them. No small task, let me tell you, but worth it.

Please visit my Gallery page at The Daily Paintworks to see more of my work.

Another site that is fun to look at is The Artists de Studio, which has studio work as opposed to plein air. With plein air painting you are out doors, painting what you see, but in the studio you can refine and enhance your work until you get what you want!

Abandoned?
Kuldigas , Latvia
9.5" x 13"   oil on board
 $75

The Virtual Paintout went to Latvia this month, so I rode up and down the highway looking for something interesting to paint. There was a lot of great scenery, Latvia is a picturesqe place. But this is what stopped me short... What was going on here? Was this an abandoned house or barn? A church? Why is this building in ruins when all the homes and farms around it seem to be prospering? You can see for yourself by clicking here... I was intrigued by this scene because it asked more questions than it answered. There's a story here, a mystery - I am curious to know what it is.

San Gimignano, Italy

Along the Walls of San Gimignano
14" x 18'   oil on canvas
$125

It's not about me for the month of June. Family concerns call me away from the easel with  no time to paint. Sigh.  So I am posting paintings of Italy done from photographs. It would be nice to be there now, even with all the summer crowds.

San Gimignano is known for it's towers, 15 of them now, but it also has these beautiful pathways around the city walls that you can walk on. There are stunning views everywhere you look, this is one of the cypress trees and their shadows in the morning sun, with the Tuscan countryside beyond.
