Dusk
Lima, Peru
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
sold

Evening falls on the outskirts of Lima... the sun goes down, the lights begin to flicker on. The waxing moon, a whisper in the sky, has been up for a while. Night time begins....

So it seemed when I found this site, traveling around on the Google Maps Street View with The Virtual Paintout  - our destination was Lima, Peru this month. Lots of interesting paintings and drawings, check 'em out!

This painting was painted on all sides, so it can be framed up, or hung, just as it is.

 Trees of Heaven - Again!
12" x 16"  oil on canvas
starting bid $75

More than a plein air painting, this is a portrait of a tree that I think is pretty special. It is very big and graceful, and it spreads out expansively, shading the street below, the highest branches visible for blocks around.  It's pretty old - it's hard to say if it started out as two trees that grew together, or one that just branched off from the bottom. It doesn't matter -  its size and beauty - that's what I'm trying to show. Its future is uncertain; it might get cut down.

It's some type of "Tree of Heaven," and though it sounds lovely, making one think of branches reaching right up into the sky, it's a species with very bad reputation for being messy and invasive. So for now it's a Heritage Tree with an uncertain future. The land around it is being developed into a high rise apartment complex, and the plan is to clear the area here to make way for a more "manicured" look. I thought I should paint this lovely tree in case it just becomes another old memory. I've painted it before, but didn't feel like I had caught its size and majesty - I hope I have done so now!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed up, or hung as is.

The Mill Pond
9" x 12" oil on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout traveled to the Isle of Wight this month, a small island in the English Channel. Using the Google Maps Street View, I looked here and there until I found this picturesque little area, just begging to be painted. The scene itself reminded me of a Constable painting! I've called it the Mill Pond, though I'm not sure it really is one, just looked like it to me. See what you think by clicking here.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed up, or hung as is.

Three Trees
100 Moffett Blvd.
11" x 14"   oil on canvas
$75

I thought I should paint these trees before they (and many more) are gone. They are on land that is soon going to be developed into a high-rise apartment building. For decades this area was made up of one or two story houses with lots of beautiful trees. But according to the new thinking, that is just wasted space. So out these trees go. Off with their heads.

To me, they are beautiful. I live a block away, but I can see the biggest tree top from my kitchen window. For years I have watched the sun make its daily journey, lighting the leaves up in the morning, and giving them a golden glow as the sun sets in the evening. So by painting these beautiful trees, which once shaded this old garage, I hope they will not be forgotten.

This painting  covers all sides - so it can be framed, but it can also be hung up as is, flat against the wall.

Trumbull Street Underpass,
Detroit, Michigan
9" x 12" acrylic on board
sold

The Virtual Paintout took a staycation this month and only traveled as far as Detroit. There were so many things to paint, big city buildings, some nice houses, some ruined ones, lots of industrial sites and some interesting examples of Americana and its curiosities. Looking at the work submitted by the different artists, you can see what I mean. Personally, I was really in a mood to paint trees, and discovered that the railroad tracks have lots of greenery around the underpasses. When I found this water tower peeking out through the trees, I knew I'd found my spot!

Storybook Sunflowers
12" x 16"  oil on canvas
sold

What's the story here? I don't really know -  part fact, part fiction, like many good tales. Starting out as a real stand of sunflowers growing by my house,  it turned into a fable of somewhere wonderful to live. The perfect little house, the perfect little garden, the perfect summer day. Simple as that!

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed up nicely, or  hung  just as it is.

This picture can be found at Fine Art America (print-on-demand), where you can order a print of any size or a card. It's worth a visit.  To own this piece, simply click on the "Buy Now" Paypal button on your left, or email me.

Sundown, North Charleston
9" x 12"  oil on board
 gifted

The Virtual Paintout is traveling around Charleston, South Carolina.  The idea is to paint from Google Street Views, and I found this lovely corner of North Charleston that just seemed like it would make a great painting. (You can see it here.)  As you can see, I used a little artistic license to make it look just like this, but it works,
right?!

Sao Bras Ahead
Azores Islands, Portugal
11" x 14"  oil on canvas
$75

The Virtual Paintout is touring around The Azore Islands off the coast of Portugal this month - there are many fine paintings so far. I stopped to paint this stand of trees on the road to Sao Bras. I was taken by the lacy pattern their branches made against the sky.

You can see more of my work by going to my Gallery page at The Daily Paintworks.

This piece is painted on all sides of this canvas. It can be framed, or it could be hung, just as is.

Just Plain Peonies

Just Plain Peonies
11" x 14"  oil on canvas

These peonies, blooming in my garden were so spectacular that they just didn't need any thing else around them! Well, I used a lot of thick paint to set them off and convey how lush they are!

Like many of my paintings, this piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, or it can be hung just as it is.
