The Virtual Paintout, an art blog challenge which uses Google Street View to paint or draw a given landscape site, has traveled to the island of Hashima, off the coast of Japan. Hashima is an abandoned mining town (island), once home to many, but a tourist site and ruin now, a perfect place for the scary month of Halloween! 

I found this wall, by the shore where some scarfs had been left behind. And what is that red object? It looks very much like a bowl - and supports the feeling of abandonment and mystery that pervades the island. You can visit this site and decide what you think by clicking here!

"Moonlit"

The Virtual Paintout is traveling again! Using Google Street View artists are invited to visit a chosen location and paint or draw the local landscape. The destination this month is the US Virgin Islands. Traveling around the main island, St. Croix to Frederiksted, I was intrigued by the juxtaposition of old remnants (practically ruins) right next to new and well-kept buildings. Case in point is this old stone structure with its arched portico directly across the street from the impressive bell tower of St. Paul's Anglican Church. Quite a contrast. I am not sure if this is building is important or not, but it gave me the idea for this painting. The whole scene looks even better in moonlight! (You can see it for yourself if you click here.)

Key West Corner

This study of sunlight and shade is from a street in Southern Florida. I traveled there with   The Virtual Paintout - a website that invites artists to draw and paint from the Google Street View.  After Hurricane Irma swept through the southern part of Florida, it seemed like a good idea to revisit the are to see it in pre-hurricane shape.  I found this dark and shady corner, and saw the possibilities for a goood painting. You can see this street corner yourself by clicking here.

Laundry Day on the River

The Matanza River flows thorough the southern edge of Buenos Aires on it’s way to the Rio de la Plata and from there to the South Atlantic Ocean. Buenos Aries is where The Virtual Paintout has traveled this month, and using Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if they were standing right there. I found this quiet corner of the river where it seemed as if everybody was doing their wash. It seemed so calm and peaceful, and unhurried that I thought I would just set up my virtual easel and paint the colorful laundry, the slow moving river and this very unusual fence. It all has such a charming feel to it, which you can see for yourself by clicking here.

"Temple Ruins"

When the Virtual Paintout decided to explore the island of Malta, I knew I would be checking out the aerchological sites. The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge, where we use Google Street View to paint or draw the local landscape. Malta is one of the oldest civilized islands in the Mediterranean. It has aercheological excavations dating as far back as the Stone Age, and this site, Tas Silg, dates from about 3500BC. to about 350A.D., with one temple being built on top of another.  I decided to paint here, because I was facinated by what these buildings might have been like,  and the contrast between these old blocks and the quiet, timeless landscape around them. 

Done in acrylics, I wanted this piece to have the feel of a visitor sitting there and sketching what they saw. You can see it yourself here

These flowers were found in Retalhuleu, Guatemala, near the Pacific coast. Guatemala is where The Virtual Paintout has gone this month, and participating artists use Google Street View to paint or draw the landscape. I found these flowers on a street corner, and felt they would make a good subject for a painting,I hope you think so, too. They are of an unknown variety (unknown to me, that is) and if you know what they are, please let me know. You can see them for yourself by clicking here.

“Last Night, I Dreamt of Home…”

This is a picture story. I have provided the picture, you tell this story. The Virtual Paintout has gone to South Korea this month, and artists use the Google Street View to find something interesting to paint. I came upon this huge apartment building which is home to many fine people. The dreamlike quality of the picture was was what attracted me, and the theme of this picture developed quickly. We often dream of home. I used iridescent paints and simple shapes to encourage the dream like quality. You can where I painted for yourself by clicking here.

Morning Light

This month, the Virtual Paintout has traveled to Tunisia. Using the Google Street View, artists paint or draw the local landscape as if we were all there. Ghana was the destination for The Virtual Paintout this month. Using Google Street View to find a place we might paint or draw, we travel around looking for just the right spot. I found this scene on Tema-Jasiken Road in eastern Ghana where the flame trees were coming into bloom. The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge using Google Street View to paint or draw at a chosen location (somewhere around the globe). This month we are in Nashville, Tennessee. Using the little peg-man, I traveled around downtown and then to parts beyond, looking for a scene that I could relate to. I came across this little produce stand, which also seems to sell plants and flowers. It looked like the perfect spot for me to paint - a charming little place - half garden, half small business, and completely picturesque. Small businesses like this one are what give character to the community. You can see what I mean by clicking the location, here!

Using Google Street View as a reference, The Virtual Paintout, an art challenge, goes around the world, painting or drawing at selected locations. This month we are in Puerto Rico. So with the street view, I wondered around cities and beaches, until I found this wonderful little house all decorated with stars, moons and other objects d’art. This little house is so picturesque and charming, it seemed right to paint it like an illustration in a story - I can imagine a story here, can’t you?  I only changed it a little, as you can see by clicking here.

This was painted for The Virtual Paintout which is a painting challenge that uses Google Street View at a different location each month to paint or draw the landscape as if you were really there. This month we visited the Balkan country of Montenegro. On the Adriatic coast, it has mountains and harbors, old towns and new developments. However, what really caught my eye was this wonderful flowering tree in full bloom. (You can see it here.)  It provided such beautiful color, and created such pleasant shade in the yard, it seems like a perfect place to live, and was certainly a pleasant place to paint!

The Virtual Paintout is an art challenge which uses Google Street View and visits a new location to paint or draw the landscape each month. It encourages creative changes in a picture, as long as you stick to the street view as a reference. This month we have gone to Tijuana, Mexico.  I found this hillside with the sun shining directly into the camera, and knew I could make many creative changes. (You can see the original site by clicking here.) I had a lot of fun working with the landscape shapes and the colors, using artistic license to get exactly what I wanted.

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Newfoundland this month. This is an art challenge using Google Street View to paint or draw a chosen location - as if you were really there.  I found this neighborhood in St. John’s - a city right on the Atlantic coast - and knew I could have fun with the view. The street here is on such a slant that it seems like the houses must lean a bit, too. Then I thought how fun it would be for a kid on a skateboard to go flying down the hill. (You can see how the street slants here.) I hope the residents of Victoria Street will appreciate my bit of whimsy! 

The sides of this canvas are painted  with solid violet. It can be framed, but you could hang it up just as it is.

Autumn Comes to High Street

The Virtual Paintout has gone to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania this month to create some art. Using Google Street View as a reference, we are invited to draw or paint a spot that has captured our eye. Traveling through farmland and cities, I found this beautiful tree turning color in a charming neighborhood in Manheim Township . (You can see it for yourself by clicking here.) Since this is the beginning of fall, I thought it would make a nice painting as we transition from one season to the next.

Norway was the destination for The Virtual Paintout this month. Using the Google Street View, artists are invited to paint or draw the local landscape of a chosen area. There are as many different approaches to the task as there are artists. It’s always fun to see what others have come up with, and there is some really nice artwork this month as always.

I found this wooded area on one of the many islands that make up the Norwegian coast, and thought to depict it in a rustic way, leaning a bit towards the abstract. You can see where I painted - using brush and palette knife - by clicking here.

A Perfect Day

I happened upon this lonely road on a stunningly beautiful day. It was so perfect, just as it is, that all I had to do was capture it. That was the challenge. The Cover Crop

I painted this for The Virtual Paintout, which is in Napa Valley, California, this month. Using the Google Street View, we create artworks as if we were there. Although everyone thinks of grapevines and wine when they think of Napa Valley, there is a second crop - a cover crop -which is also important, mustard.

When the grape harvest is in and winter is almost finished, the mustard is in full bloom. Mustard flowers carpet the area between the vines, their yellow hue stretching as far as the eye can see. Not only beautiful, the mustard plant is beneficial as well. It helps to prevent erosion, adds nitrogen to the soil and prevents the soil from compacting as workers move about the fields. And of course, the mustard seed itself is used in making mustard, another product of the region. Tourists come from all around for the Mustard Festival.
