Red Earth
9" x 12"  oil on canvas
 $75

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to New South Wales this month for some drawing and painting. Using Google Street View, we depict local scenes that appeal to us. I went outside Byrock, and found this lovely scene. This shade of red earth may be more intense when it's cloudy or rainy, like when Google took the street view pictures. But this scene, these colors, were what I really wanted to paint, and perhaps I used a bit of artistic license! Maybe someday I will get the chance to travel there and paint the landscape from real life! (Click here to see where I painted!)

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up, just as it is.

Snow Queen
12” x 16”   oil

Well, this was the find of the season!  A plain old amaryllis bulb, bought at a discount store, bloomed into this regal beauty. Someone said it's called “Snow Queen,” which I thought to be a perfect name. It (she) bloomed up on a long stalk into this heavy beauty, then fell over and broke, and ended her days in an egg vase on the kitchen table. Her elegance demanded that I paint her, do a good job, and get it right! (Hopefully, I did!)

This piece is painted on gallery wrapped canvas (1.5”); the picture continues minimally on all sides. It hangs flush against the wall and does not need framing, but you could frame it if you like.

The Old Gate
9” x 12”   oil

I love this gate, don’t you? The Virtual Paintout has gone to Majorca, the island off the coast of Spain for the month of February.  Using Google Street View we artists travel around looking for something that strikes our fancy to paint or draw. I decided to go out into the countryside to find something noteworthy for my piece. And I found it here with this old gate - at least I think it’s old, it seems to stand alone without a fence. Whatever, I thought it was a wonderful spot, with that bush coming into bloom, those old buildings, and that big field. It all evokes a sense of timelessness. You can see for yourself by clicking here

This piece is painted on canvas, on all sides. It can be framed, but you can just hang it up, if you like.

A Posey Party
11"  x 14”
Acrylic on gallery-wrap canvas

A bit of a departure from the usual, but so much fun! I was intrigued by this style and wanted to explore more. Slightly abstract, slightly more illustrative, it's straight out of my imagination. This piece was supposed to be quickly done, just a cute little idea I had. No such thing. It turned out to be intricate and absorbing, needing constant adjustment, constant re-working and lots of time. Still, I rather like it, and I hope you do too. There might be more in the future - ideas are just popping into my head!

This piece is painted on gallery wrapped canvas (1.5”); the picture continues on all sides. It hangs flush against the wall and does not need framing, but you can frame it if you like.

The Woods Near Loch Dochfour
9” x 12”  Acrylic on canvas
sold

The Virtual Paintout has traveled to Scotland this month. Using Google Street View, artists are invited to paint or draw a local scene. I chose this wooded area at the edge of Loch Dochfour which is right below the Ness River. I didn’t exactly plan to paint it like this, but I got to work, and inspiration just took over. You can see what it really looks like by clicking here.  This is one of the wonderful things about creativity, it takes on a life of it’s own.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up, just as it is.

Fruit ’n’ Flowers
11” x 14”   oil

A simple winter still life, composed of fruit in season and flowers from the store. Put those flowers in an old jar on a kitchen towel, back them up against a coat hanging from a chair, and voila! Instant still life.

This piece is painted on all sides of the canvas. It can be framed, but you could hang it up, just as it is.

The Road Home
9” x 12”  oil
gift

This month The Virtual Paintout is visiting Ecuador. Using the Google Street View, we artists draw of paint as if we were actually there.  I traveled up high in the mountains looking for a spot that really spoke to me. I found it here, where the tall trees made lacy patterns against the night sky. I could imagine someone driving through the night, seeing that house with the lights on and knowing they were almost home. (To see this spot yourself, click here.)

Bright Flowers
oil on gallery-wrapped canvas
11 x 14 x 1.5

Winter weather calls for some bright color to balance the grey out. I saw some flowers at the farmers market that were an incredible magenta pink, and thought it would be the perfect painting challenge - to match that color and compliment it. Inspiration comes from everywhere, the landscape, a still life set up, a brief encounter with something or someone, but also the imagination. Imagination is one of the wonderful conditions of being human.

This piece is painted on all sides of a gallery-wrapped (or box) canvas. No need to frame it (but of course you could), it hangs flush against the wall and is ready to hang.

Delphiniums
30" x 36"   Oil on canvas
nfs

Sometimes paintings find their way back to you. This painting went to a friend several years ago, and when she could no longer keep it, it was returned to me. I am most grateful, and wish to thank her. Being in my possession again, it is once again on the market. It is big - so big I had a hard time photographing it, hence the glare, sorry. It comes framed, a traditional wood frame, dark blue with silver highlights and a thin linen liner.
