This month, The Virtual Paintout is traveling around Tasmania, the big island just south of Australia. Riding the highway via the Google maps, I came upon this interesting bridge, purely by chance. Built in 1843, it was built of local stone by convict labor. Jagged, spiky rocks were used on the sides of the bridge, but the reason why remains unclear - some say for decoration, others say to keep cattle from straying off the sides. You have to agree, it's very picturesque.
